22 May Pinus thunbergii Japanese Black Pine
DESCRIPTION: Japanese black pine is a medium sized, irregularly pyramidal tree. Needles persist three to four years and are a lustrous dark green. Buds are unique, they are 12 to 20cm long and have a very prominent silvery colour. Bark is grey on young trees and small branches, changing to black and plated on larger branches and the trunk, becoming quite thick on older trunks.
TREE CARE: Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilise when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune to shape if necessary.
